History of Juneau

Juneau was earlier known as Harrisburg, which was named after the co-founder Richard Harris after which the locals formed an allegiance with his partner Joe Juneau. During the year 1880, both Richard and Joe got guide  Tlingit Chief  Kowee to give guidance on the way to Gold Creek, where they discovered gold. Thus started Alaska’s  gold rush and strike and to mark timeline in Juneau’s modern history. This also brought about 40 minors who set up trading posts, missionaries and saloons. Soon, within a year, the birth of small town came into being.

During the year 1916, the Alaska - Juneau become first operational gold mine in the world. In 1900s fishing, transportation, sawmill and canaries also became largest contributors to the economy of Juneau's growth.

Cathedral of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Founded in the year 1885, the Cathedral of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary is Roman Catholic Diocese of Juneau’s mother church. It is also known for being the smallest church in the entire North of America. For mass timings and other information, click here.

Chapel by the Lake

Established in the year 1958, Chapel by the Lake is another beautiful church in the city of Juneau. It is a Presbyterian church and also a part of the A Covenant Order of Evangelical Presbyterians (ECO). The church was designed by Linn A. Forrest and Harold Floss in a classic Rustic Architecture. Some notable features include its gorgeous rafters, walls and trusses. There is also a huge window behind the altar that looks out to the eye-catching Auke Lake and Mendenhall Glacier. Juneau Icefield

Situated just north of Juneau, Juneau Icefield is one of the most popular ice fields in North America. It is also the 5th largest ice field in Western Hemisphere. The ice field is also home to several glaciers including Taku Glacier and Mendenhall Glacier. It is a famous tourist attraction and attracts several hikers, flown in by helicopters, who want to experience the thrill of walking on deep crevasses.
