Getting In and Around Juneau

The city of Juneau is the only state capital in the country that is not directly accessible by road. However, there are road connections to many other areas that are adjacent to the city. The only way a car can come into town is via the Alaska Marine Highway Ferry System. Getting to Juneau is just a part of the exciting adventure that waits for you ahead. There are plenty of other options including air and sea to reach Juneau.

Arriving Juneau by Plane

Believe it or not, despite no road connectivity, Juneau is actually one of the most popular tourist destinations in the state of Alaska. The city can be easily reached via air.

The city of Juneau is the hub of all air travel in Southeast Alaska and caters to almost 230 daily flights, including chartered and regional. Juneau International Airport (JNU) is the closest airport to Juneau and is located just seven miles from Downtown Juneau. Alaska Airlines offers regular jet service between Juneau, Seattle, Sitka and Anchorage throughout the year. It also offers service to Gustavus (Glacier Bay) from Juneau during the summer season. Delta Airlines is another airline that offer seasonal service between Juneau and Seattle each year. For regional travel and chartered planes, companies like Alaska Seaplanes, Wings of Alaska and Air Excursions provide regular service.

Getting To and From Juneau International Airport (JNU)

There are many ways to reach Downtown Juneau and back from the airport:

Car Rental: Renting a car is one of the most effective and easiest ways of reaching the city from airport. It is also a great way of getting around Juneau. Here are the car rental companies available at JNU:

Bus/Shuttle Services: The public transport system of Juneau is managed and operated by Capital Transit and offers regular bus transport from the airport to the city. Apart from that, many hotels in Juneau also offers complimentary shuttle transfer between the airport and the hotel.

Taxis: Several taxis are also available at the airport. A ride from JNU to the city would cost approximately $25.

Arriving and Getting Around Juneau via Water Ways

Juneau is also a popular stop for several Alaskan cruise ships. It is also one of the best ways to explore the Inside Passage. Moreover, since they dock near Downtown Juneau, the ships offer easy access to other tourist attractions, restaurants and more.

For those who do not like boarding cruise ships, they can reach the city via Alaska Marine Highway System (AMHS). It is a ferry system, owned by the government, and offers easy access to almost 30 coastal regions throughout the year. Moreover, travelers can also explore the smaller towns in the Inside Passage on the way. Several types of accommodations are also available onboard.

Arriving and Getting Around Juneau via Road

While one cannot reach the city directly via road, they can use the ferry (that transports their car) to reach the city. The 1500 mile long ALCAN or Alaskan Canadian Highway is definitely worth the car ride. Today, the highway has been completely re-constructed to include all amenities like gas, lodging and rest stops for the comfort of travelers. The best way to travel within the city is by renting a car and exploring at your leisure. Other than that, there are also various taxis and the public transport system, which is operated by the Capital Transit. Another great way of traveling within the city is biking. There is even a bike path that runs parallel to the main highway.
